The cuirass not only gave the cuirassiers their name but also marked them as members of the heavy cavalry and was a last vestige of chivalry. The cuirasses of the rank-and-file, consisting of breast- and backplates, were made of iron and lined with grey canvas. In the lining of the front piece there was a pocket for the field cap.
