Uniforms and Equipment of the Old Army - Cavalry - Cuirassiers - The Black Cuirass of the Gardes du Corps
The Gardes du Corps regiment (Potsdam) had black cuirasses for special occasions.
They were blackened iron cuirasses, the first set of which was a gift from the Russian Tsar.
The edges of the cuirasses were bound with red wool cord; for officers this was made of silk.
From 1897 the scale chains were made of tombak; before that these were also black-lacquered iron.
For officers the scale chains were gilded.
In 1897 the regiment received new black cuirasses of particularly elegant shape as an imperial gift (Wilhelm II.).
