The regiment's founding day was 27 September 1866.

The unit was raised on 30 October 1866 in Schleswig. It initially consisted of contributions from other hussar regiments (Nos. 7 and 9).

From 07 January 1867 the regiment bore the designation: Schleswig-Holstein Hussar Regiment No. 16.

On 09 September 1873 the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I was appointed regimental chief. This was an honorary position.

For this reason the formation henceforth bore the name Hussar Regiment "Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, King of Hungary" (Schleswig-Holstein) No. 16.

Together with the 2nd Brandenburg Uhlan Regiment No. 11 it formed the 17th Cavalry Brigade.
