The Cuirassier Regiment Duke Friedrich Eugen of Württemberg (West Prussian) No. 5 had its founding day on September 12, 1717 and stood in the tradition of the Old Prussian Dragoon Regiment v. Esebeck (D VIII.).
The regiment was initially established on October 7, 1808 in Insterburg as a dragoon regiment. The cadre troop was the aforementioned Old Prussian dragoon regiment.
The enlisted replacements were drawn from West Prussia and at times from Lower Silesia and Posen.
The last peacetime garrisons were Riesenburg, Rosenberg and Deutsch-Eylau.
The last regimental commander was Hermann v. Grimm.
The white koller had pink-colored trim on the collar, down the front and on the sleeve cuffs.

The cuirass not only gave the cuirassiers their name but also marked them as members of the heavy cavalry and was a last vestige of chivalry. The cuirasses of the rank-and-file, consisting of breast- and backplates, were made of iron and lined with grey canvas. In the lining of the front piece there was a pocket for the field cap.
