The foundation day of this unit was considered to be April 2, 1717 in the tradition of the old Prussian Dragoon Regiment Ansbach-Bayreuth No. 5.
The regiment was formed in the year 1806 in Elbing or was incorporated into the new Prussian army.

The regiment's facing color was 'carmoisine red'.
These facing colors were shown on the rounded collar and the Swedish turnbacks of the koller and the blue tunic as well as on the cap rim and the protruding front of the flat cap.
The blue tunic had silver buttons.
The unit also wore a special breastplate which was screwed onto the cuirass. This could also be worn on a necklace.
The breastplate displayed the heraldic eagle, trophies of victory, a crown, and the year 1745.
On the cartridge box, alongside the typical ornamentation, two flaming grenades made of brass could also be seen.

The origin of the marine infantry dates back to 18491. From 1852 the Marinierkorps was called the Seebataillon. In 1889 it was split into the 1st and 2nd Seebataillon. The later 3rd Seebataillon was formed in 1897. The 1st and 2nd See-Bataillon (Kiel and Wilhelmshaven respectively) each comprised 4 companies, 1 fortress telegraph platoon and 1 machine gun detachment. Of the 3rd Seebataillon only 2 companies and the home battery were stationed in Cuxhaven; the remainder were with the East Asian naval detachment (in the Kiautschou protectorate).
